About the event
IMAGING AND IMITATING GOD
In the late medieval and early modern eras, Jewish and Christian authors agreed that we were all created in the image of God. And if we bear the divine likeness within ourselves, then we ought to burnish that likeness by imitating God in our lives. But not everyone agreed on what it meant to 'image' or 'imitate' the divine. For kabbalistically informed authors like Moshe Cordovero, it might mean living virtuously by replicating God's mercy. For Christian mystics like Meister Eckhart, it might mean becoming nothing, just as God is 'no-thing' to the mystic. And for Italian Renaissance Humanists like Pico della Mirandola, it might mean having the freedom to choose to become whatever we want to become, mimicking the omnipotence by which God can do whatever God wills.
